It snowed in my neck of the woods last week, just two days after I returned to the UK from sunny Cape Town. It was quite the swing in weather, but beautiful.

I’ve been waiting months for my special annotated edition of Ann Patchett’s Bel Canto — and it finally arrived.
This novel is actually one of Patchett’s that does not include an ambivalent mother, but perhaps I’ve forgotten and will find one on my second (annotated) read.
Lane Scott Jones wrote on Second Rodeo about meeting other childfree women and a collaborative art project that involves childfree women writing letters to unborn children. I’m intrigued by this project and think it is such a beautiful way to honor this decision, particularly when it might be a fraught or emotional choice. I’m considering writing one myself, just to see what comes out.
Back to my trip to South Africa. I spent five days at a private nature reserve that borders Kruger, and it was genuinely the most spectacular trip of my life. One relevant point for Bad Mothers:
